A student used powder of calcium carbonate rather than marble pieces for the laboratory preparation of CO$\rm _2$ gas.

  1. Write a balanced chemical equation for the chemical reaction mentioned above.
  2. Why did he/she use powder of marble instead of marble chips?

Solution

1.Ans:

The chemical reaction is of the laboratory preparation of \(\rm CO_{2}\) gas.

Reaction:

When calcium carbonate is treated with dilute hydrochloric acid, carbon dioxide is formed.

\(\rm CaCO_{3} \) + \(\rm 2HCl \) → \(\rm CaCl_{2} \) +\(\rm H_{2}O \) + \(\rm CO_{2}\) ↑

2.Ans:

If the surface area of two or more reactants is large, there is great chance of collision course together and the reaction rate is increased.

Hence, he/she used powder of marble instead of marble chips as the reactants will have larger surface areas and the rate of reaction would be faster.
